Artist's Statement

“What many artists and poets have in common is an excruciating sensitivity to their surroundings. Nature takes a deep hold on them when they observe it quietly, and the intensity of the relationship that sometimes develops between the artist and the land has much to do with the vision that inspires the painted image.” Elizabeth Mowry

Woodlands, fields, streams—these are the places that in particular, call to me, inspire me, and demand my attention. These are the places that renew me, that imbue me with a sense of peace, solitude, and contentment. These are the places that I paint. Whether in the field or in my studio using sketches and reference photographs, I enter into a dialogue with the landscape and respond to the scene in front of me. Through the manipulation of light and the re-orchestration of nature, I strive to demonstrate the poetry of the commonplace—to create a piece of visual poetry. Each painting is an invitation to the viewer to join me in the experience of that space in an exploration of a world far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
I work in both in pastel and oil. I work from dark to light, thin to thick, transparent to opaque, layering colors and shapes until the scene gradually emerges. My work is an exploration of possibility, allowing each piece to emerge and develop. Then, like the poet, I leave it and it is open to the interpretation of the viewer to whom it then belongs
